Applications are invited for short-term lecture and research fellowships for senior scholars at the post-doctoral level and for
advanced graduate students at the pre-doctoral level. Duration of fellowships will be from one to five months. Fellows will be required
to present a minimum of two lectures per month at approved host institutions (see below) or the AIPS centers in Islamabad or Lahore.
Each participant will be required to sign a release that stipulates the relevant security issues that need to be adopted.

Summer Langauge Institute at SASLI
The South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) based at the University of Wisconsin – Madison is offering intensive summer courses in the following South Asian languages: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan and Urdu. Applications for Summer 2010 are now being accepted.
Graduate students are eligible for FLAS funding through SASLI. In addition, graduate students are also eligible for fee remissions (partial or full). The application deadline for both forms of funding is February 5, 2010.

John F. Richards Fellowship Program
The American Institute of Afghanistan Studies (AIAS) invites applications for support of short-term research or other scholarly projects that will advance knowledge of Afghanistan. Applicants should be at the post-doctoral level or have equivalent professional experience. The fellowship can support work focusing on any aspect of Afghanistan Studies.
The maximum award per fellowship is $6,000. Applications must be received by April 1, 2010 to receive consideration. Decisions will be made by May 1, 2010. Eligibility is limited to US citizens and permanent residents.

ANHS Senior Fellowship Program
The Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS) invites applications for support of short-term research or other scholarly projects that will advance knowledge of the Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukush mountain regions. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level or have equivalent professional experience. The fellowship will support work focusing on any aspect of Himalayan studies.
The application deadline is April 1, 2010 with an anticipated award date of May 1, 2010. The project or research must be completed by May 2011. A non-refundable processing fee of US$30 must be included with the completed application form. Please make checks payable to the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies; payments may also be made via PayPal to membership@anhs-himalaya.org.
The fellowship is open to all. The award for ANHS members or scholars affiliated with ANHS member institutions will be US$1,500. For all other scholars, the award will be US$1,250.
ANHS will assist with the visa process in Nepal through the ANHS office in Kathmandu. Should the fellowship be awarded for work in any other Himalayan region country, ANHS will request the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) organization in that country to assist with the visa process. However, final responsibility for obtaining visa and research permission, as necessary, will remain with the awarded fellow.
Applicants should provide the following:
* A current CV.
* Research or project proposal that should include the following:
* Title;
* Brief abstract of the research or project of approximately 250 words for use on the ANHS web site;
* Statement describing the nature of the proposed research or project, including the contribution it will make to Himalayan studies. This should be double-spaced and not exceed 1,500 words;
* Location(s) where the research or project will be conducted and time schedule for its completion; and
* Summary budget (please also note any other grant applications submitted). If travel is involved, please be specific as to costs.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF INDIAN STUDIES FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. AIIS especially encourages applicants in fields such as Development Studies, Natural Resources Management, Public Health, and Regional Planning. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree. Scholarly/Professional development fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. The Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University announces openings in Hindi-Urdu language to be filled at the Lecturer or Associate in Discipline rank, beginning July 2010. We are seeking professional language teachers with a serious commitment teaching languages for academic purposes. This is a full time appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.
Applicants should preferably have a Ph.D. in Hindi-Urdu, but those with a Master's degree and considerable language teaching experience are also encouraged to apply. Salary and rank commensurate with experience.
We are seeking professional language teachers with a serious commitment to developing pedagogical materials and incorporating technological innovations into the curriculum. A background in Hindi-Urdu literature is an asset. Responsibilities will include teaching 2 or 3 courses per semester and other duties associate with the language program.
Successful candidates for all ranks (Lecturer,Associate) must have native or near native fluency in Hindi-Urdu and English, foreign language instruction experience, and an oral proficiency based approach. Our preferred applicants will be expert in reading and writing both Devanagari and Urdu scripts. Applicants who know only one script should submit their plans for rapidly learning the other script and for appropriately enhancing their vocabulary so that they will be able to deal effectively with a range of Hindi-Urdu styles in the classroom. Lecturers in Discipline (language) must have at least 2 years teaching experience.
